Supporting the Hypothalamus with Essential Oils

All of these issues relate to the hypothalamus, a pearl size region of the brain located just above the brainstem that controls all hormonal messages for the endocrine, stress and digestive systems. It both sends and receives signals to the body and needs to be functioning optimally for the appropriate signals to both be sent and received.
When the hypothalamus is out of balance, it can negatively impact:
- Adrenal Function
- Thyroid Function
- Hunger and Thirst Impulses
- The ability to handle stress
- All endocrine Function (including the sexual organs)
Conversely, when the hypothalamus functions optimally, the cascade of hormones falls into balance. Balancing the hypothalamus can have a profound and quite immediate impact.
Addressing Issues at the Root Cause
The Hypothalamus is the command and control center in the brain overseeing many functions, including the endocrine system, digestive system and nervous system. It also oversees the body’s stress response and certain metabolic processes and activities of the autonomic nervous system.
The hypothalamus synthesizes and secretes certain hormones that control the body based on information received from different internal and external stimuli. The hypothalamus first takes in the information and then sends out appropriate hormonal signals to bring the body back into balance. Unfortunately, chronic and prolonged stress or toxicity can compromise the ability of the hypothalamus to receive clear signals – think of a poor cell phone connection – which then compromises it ability to send out the appropriate hormonal signals.
All the endocrine glands await the management of the hypothalamus which monitors the endocrine system’s levels. One example is the body’s stress response which begins with the hypothalamus responding to external or internal stimuli by sending a hormone to the pituitary gland which then sends another hormone to the adrenal glands signaling the adrenals release the hormones cortisol and epinephrine to meet the demands of the stress. This is known as the HPA access.
The hypothalamus knows the right amount of hormones to release by monitoring the organs. When the hypothalamus gets the signal that the right volume of cortisol has been released, it sends the signal to stop releasing additional cortisol. If the hypothalamus is compromised in its ability to receive the signal that sufficient levels of cortisol have been reached, this can in turn throw off the signals sent to the adrenals, causing them to continue releasing excessive cortisol. When looking to repair exhausted adrenals, it is important to balance both the adrenals and the upstream hypothalamus.
